You laid a simple little box before me,
Quite unremarkable, not gilded nor jeweled.
No silken pillow did it rest upon,
No rich velvet ribbon did bind it closed.
I gingerly lifted it in my hand,
It's weight told me naught of its contents.
No chiming of precious metals,
No telling clue of its inner portents.
I very carefully opened the paltry lid,
The light shone on the unshielded recesses.
No finely chiseled ivory baubles,
No gleaming emerald nor ruby brooches.
I felt the tears touch my misty eyes,
Looking upon the vacant box you had given.
No, not empty, as some would think,
No, entirely full, with the gift of your submission.
You kneel humbly in silence,
Bowing your head, I simply smile with pride.
No longer shall you seek yourself,
No, my cherished love, for I shall be your guide.
