The Grey Doe

(for my father – on my first hunting trip, years past, in thick November woods)

Heel to toe
s...l...o...w...l...y
Leaves silently surrender
Cold sinks thick to core
Woods whisper wisdom
And we find communion with Earth
Alone yet fully connected
Eyes are opened
Stillness reigns our senses
We pause
And listen to life breathing tight around us
Tentative steps break the dawn
She descends with grace
Pausing to inhale potential threats
This is her realm
And we
Mere visitors
Are entranced with her beauty.
