In the tall dry grass,
In the field by the pond,
That’s where you’ll find them,
The little idiots,
Jumping like goofs,
Delirious with the wind,
Giddy with their August in the sun.

Goofy Idiots

Who are the "little idiots" and why are they "goofs"? The rest of the poem is open and clear (well written) for a wide audience. The fourth and fifth lines restrict the work to only those in the know. (Are we talking boys, grasshoppers, frogs, etc.?)Read the poem without those lines. It works as well or better.
