The Light of the moon dusted the world with silver,
The flames of the torches frosted it with gold,
As silently they entered the dark forbidding Hall.
The nameless guests decked in their splendour
The swish of velvet capes, the tap of well made heels
Brought to life for one night for this the Magpie Ball
A music only they could hear wafted gently over them
The dancers twirled and shimmered across the ballroom floor,
Their forms like dazzling angels gathered in the magic night.
The smell of perfumed bodies pressed close upon another
As each they leaned much nearer to watch the special sight.
The beauty of the women, the magnificence of the men
All that night were equals displaying hidden charms.
But one by one they faltered and fell to the abyss
The damned they walked that night among the faceless horde.
They touched each dancer displaying their secret forms
And one by one they crumbled to nothing more than dust.
The sun destroyed their revels and the light obscured their flight.
