The only place she wants to be is here,
Upon the little jetty where she waits
And stares out at the sea; will he appear
Again or will he not? She contemplates
These options as she spreads a blanket out
Upon the wooden slats, dusted with sand,
Blown from the beach and scattered all about
The unresisting surfaces; she'd planned
To press these to his lap when he arrived,
She'd show off all the parts that he'd require
Her to do; for submission has survived
Another night; and he's conquered desire;
Or pushed it back to reinforce the space
That he will leave to help her find her place.
