         When all goes awry
venomous fury
flows through veins tainted
by fear and loathing.
Up from the depths
with chains broken
rises the Dark One.
The Other.
The amoral flame
that burns both friend
and foe alike.
When control is taken
even if briefly
the facade of contentment fails
and the eyes
tell the story of the soul.
With smirking glare
promises of pain shine forth
from a countenance of malevolence.
Then with insidious words
and closed fist
subservience is forced
upon all within reach.
When the rage subsides
and the eyes clear
malice is replaced
first with confusion
then with anguish
until the mask is restored.
This new pain is then harbored
within as fuel
for the fire of another day.
