I.

the poem was their lover
in a small room
at dusk

with enough wine
for a long night

and candles
of course
candles

they read the poem
held it gently in their mouths
rolled it on their tongues

the poem undressed them
down to the skin
then down to the muscle
then down to the bone
then down to their souls

their candle flame souls swayed together

the words writhed through their teeth
and crawled through our lips

II.

he wrote with his thick pen in her mouth
his free verse rhythm found her free verse rhythm mouthing O's...
in the dim light

she swallowed the words spilling out of him
she was nourished by the dreamlike visions -

her clitoris was her most delicate nib
with which she scrawled her fleshy words
across his whirling tongue

III.

the poem was their lover
in a small room
at dawn

and he joined the fingers of morning light
that played with her tousled hair
