Your voice, lowered to the whisper of the wind
Each syllable like a golden leaf falling
My ear to the phone, listening … hearing
Three words punctuated by silence
Set off and separate, almost submerged
In the white noise of the line
A different, an almost silent voice
Said, “I love you”
I answered, my words surprising me by their solidity
And without a quaver in my voice
Replied, “I love you too”
