A metal plate in a dark studio
Smooth and shining, ugly nor beautiful
Until the artist takes up the needle
And starts to draw a face –
Faintly visible at first
        But quickly stronger.

The smooth face is etched in strong lines
That get harder as the picture grows
Until old age faces you,
Ugly and beautiful –
Frightfully real
        But soon no longer.
