Author's Note: The first three lines of the poem are from a book called "The Merro Tree" by Kate Waitmen. It's the only lines that she wrote for what was supposed to be a saga of war, they caught me and haunted me because it was unfinished, so finally i wrote my own poem of it.
--------------------------
The There Beyond
I will be my own boatman
in the There Beyond
and the waters of forgetfulness
will swallow my regret
as the river rushes by
carrying souls and souls
of those who lead my way.
Through the blood
my boat will travel
now I long for that retreat
the pain of thousands
a burden on my soul.
The fires of Hell
leap up around me
as the screams of the dying
fill my ears
the screams of those
that my hand killed.
There is no forgiveness
only regret, only pain.
the pleading of those
who died in anguish
will fill my head
the taste of their blood
on my tongue
the streams of their tears
run down my face.
Until I reach
the There Beyond
my soul shall weep.
