It rolled down the tracks
The sound unmistakable
Carrying through the night
Cutting the darkness

The shrill shriek
Of its whistle
Calling my name
In its haunting voice

Then pushing forward
Disappearing into the black
As if it had never been

Passing through my life
And journeying onward
Leaving behind
Those that saw it fading
Into the abyss

Rumbling on into the world
Of someone else
And making them lift their head
And sigh

As the train
Passed them by
