The Wishing Well

byCindersglasslipper©

It stands alone
In the stinking sun
Through storms and drought
It’s weathered all
Protected still
By its huge stone wall

You peer in close
Its darkness holds
The wishes and hopes
Of days of old

Toss a coin
Make a wish
Dare to hope
Hear a splash
The tinny joke
Just laughs right back

The pullie operates
The life we need
The sustenance of thirst
That feeds our greed

A crank of the handle
And the bucket falls
The mighty arm which releases it all

Is it You or me
I see in the well

Your strength
Your power

My need
My thirst

Your lust
Your greed
Just take it all

Pull my string oh wishing well
As I prey to god
That I keep my soul

In its darkened depths
The bucket will fall

The dreams of others
So long before
They rush up to greet me
I see them all

The hopes the fears
The silent screams
As the coin does fall
It rings loudly in my shattered ears

Toss a coin
Make a wish
Dare to hope
Hear a splash
The tinny Joke
Please don’t laugh
For it’s all my hope
