You watch them,
Lovers, you assume,
Walking hand in hand along the shore,
And thoughts well up
Of younger days,
Of brighter ways,
Of possibilities,
Now seeming gone,
Annulled by time
And force of circumstance.
You think how vast
The ocean of your pain,
How total, endless,
A forever separation
Between you and the new dreams
That have yet to birth themselves.
They lie dormant,
Awaiting the life-giving seed
Sewn in the heart
Through intercourse with hope.
But hope is preoccupied,
And you are out of time.
