When we enter this existence, alone
we are given a gift: a basket plaited rich
with the intents and hues of our ancestors
pattern lovingly woven
directing our behavior as a people

over the centuries of lifetimes
the edges may begin to fray
leaking traditions and old gods
each generation required to mend the holes
with threads chosen from every civilization

binding lives and cultures of many peoples
rejoicing in the diversity
intertwining yesterdays
intermingling with all the tomorrows
sumptuous display of durability and resolve

so, if one man's dreams unravel
spilling his resolve in empty puddles
there are many to help him gather the loose threads
and reweave a pattern strong and pliable
to bind his life whole again
