Time's soft wind is wearing down
Your fingerprint impressions on my heart
The bloodstains of your sudden leaving
Covered by new grown hope and joy

But in my soul I carry memory's ache
Of broken promises and what might have been
And find myself thoughtlessly checking
Pages where we as lovers new scribed our joy

Does your flesh still echo with my gentle fingers
Your lips yet tingle with the after glow of desire?
Do you hunt for traces of my laughter in your past
And wish that endings did not have to be so sharp?

I must now shed this skin of hurt and doubt
And let you live on unbound by my unfading pain
And from the flower of what we had and shared
plant the seed of lives lived now apart but once in love
