The warm graveyard wind
blows in the bedroom window
like Hermes' sweet breath

in the back garden,
purple lilacs bloom in throngs
over sleeping rock work

outside, the road roars
the cheap lust of men in trucks,
casting their nets wide

inside, the torment saint
reads, prays, and sins: filling days
lost love left empty
