Click hereWe said we'd go together. Something there
felt just like love and we pronounced the word
and didn't think it clashed but failed to tell
the other what we meant, or just what dreams
we used to dream at night when life was cold
and laughter far away. So, well agreed,
we made our journey bonded, ever more
to hunger after what we thought was love –
as distant as a buzzard and a dove.
Where to begin? Simple on the surface but many layered. Rhythm enhanced the poem instead of got in the way. Syntax and line breaks gave the rhythm just the right amount of pause. Just enough alliteration. I'm still mulling over the contrast between the buzzard and the dove, the latter love and peace, the former perhaps predatory and opportunistic. No matter, that the contrast was stark in and of itself worked.
