He's out there
with hammer and nails
she's on her toes
with anticipation
it's the tree house
he promised
it's looking good.
So what if it’s level
with my bedroom window?
She's clutching her skirt
with excitement the grin
never leaving her face
Will the squirrels get in?
Only if you invite them.

Oh no! It's raining
and the construction crew
disbands. It's supper time
anyway
he tells her.
They leave me smiling
at my monitor all evening.
Work begins afresh next day
among the maple leaves
leaving no doubt
this is serious stuff.
She stands at the foot
of the Daddy-sized ladder
looking up until her neck
aches and she has to look
away afraid of missing
something magical
