frozen like a statue
amid a private library’s
vast array of books
the conquest of a hunter
mounted above

a grizzly from the american northwest
the lion’s head and elephant tusks
     a safari to Africa
     a panther, black like opal
from the rain forests of the amazon
white tigers of the indian jungle
     others as exotic, as dangerous
     displayed with pride

a woman
stands naked
displayed for all to see
a trophy of the hunter’s
most recent conquest
