Twelve Notes Written on Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird

      with apologies to Wallace Stevens

      I.

The old book
Ink annotations
On yellowed pages.

      II.

Poe-Raven
Sensation, not ideas
A shadow's wings spread
The breeze on my face
Flies away.

      III.

What reality is like
"Like a tree," he says
In miniature.

      IV.

A scant visage
Anti-Rational?
The question mark mine:
How feathers - black or not
Are anti anything?

      V.

Cold poets of winter
Brave the snow
It doesn't change
The bitter words
Dark stains on white.

      VI.

Instead, watch
Blackbirds on snowdrifts.

      VII.

I know poetry
And the sound of wings
Birds suddenly startled
From trees.

      VIII.

Reality
The poets who evade it.

      IX.

My car parked
Beneath the live oak trees
On Seventh Street.

      X.

Very likely
Of necessity they write
Sometimes rhyme
In a foreboding air
Of despair.

      XI.

They perch in evergreen
And along the wires
Lining the roadway
Their shadows move
At our feet.

      XII.

Since Hitchcock
They've never been the same
To me.
