Two of Us
If there were only two of us,
Do you think we could make it right?
Without our friends to criticise,
And cause another fight.
If it was just me and you,
Would we make it work?
Or would you still think of me,
As some obnoxious jerk?
If you tell me sorry,
Do I believe what you say?
Will it really help us,
Get through another day?
If I took you away from this,
You and me, alone,
Could we make a go of it?
Or would we still moan and groan?
If they say we shouldn't be,
Will you go along?
Or will you put up a fight,
And tell them that they're wrong?
If they tell me I can do better,
Should I take them at their word?
Or should I just ignore them,
And pretend I haven't heard.
If we put them all behind us,
And run off for a while,
Where no-one will ever find us,
Will that make us smile?
If we're alone together,
Somewhere that's miles away,
Can we solve our problems,
Although the skies are grey?
If my arms are around you,
At the setting of the sun,
Will you look around at me,
And say that we have won?
If we can be together,
At the end of another day,
Could we take it farther?
Can we make it pay?
These are the things I ask myself,
After every little spat,
Knowing the answer should be no,
But not believing that.
So I'll go on thinking,
If it was just we two,
Perhaps we'll make a go of it,
And hope that you do too.
