Anno Domini 1901

In a pit the Trekboers made him dig,
Bandele glared at a calamine chin
behind a breech loading Remington

above which Unkulunkulu rose
from a fetid swamp in Zululand
as a swarm of ancestral fathers

to canker tonight the jungle sweat
of farmers who pray to their Jesus Christ
under holey mosquito nets
that he kill all the snakes in paradise.

To the reader who sent me the e-mail:

Calamine lotion, which dries to a pink powder, was how one would treat sunburn back then. The Trekboers, who were of Dutch stock, of course, were very fair-skinned. Unkulunkulu was the chief Zulu God who would send animals to earth to do his bidding.
