you sit at a table for two, alone
the pavement uneven and cracked
New Orleans, the banquette narrow in the Quarter
who do you wait for?
puzzled look on your face
as you sip your sazerac
and why do you drink that, i wonder
as i watch you from the shadows
of the courtyard
across the street.

suddenly i realize
you are not puzzled
no, your face matches mine
aching want
unbridled need
why do i stand here, watching, waiting?
in the dank humid coolness
under the ferns
the bougainvillea trailing down
across my shoulder.

i step forward
passion propelling me
desire taking me
and suddenly, your head snaps up
from its forlorn place
nostrils flaring
is my scent that strong i wonder?
i step out from my hiding place
you stand
chair falling back
sazerac forgotten.
