Four in the morning
a gentle reminder
look as I might
I’ll never find her,
A single star
in an infinite sky
somehow, somewhere,
I have to try,

High overhead
a jetliner sails
heading to Asia
two long contrails,
The moon is bright
gibbous and waning
Fire Marshall wishes
it’d start raining,

Ground is dry
but winds have abated
on Saturday night
had her hair braided,
Drank gin and tonics
set on the deck
gave me a hug
paid the check,

In a different life
some different location
a dying star
or the birth of a nation,
What might be different
what would be the same
the Fire Marshal still
wishing for rain,

So, I drift off to sleep
like some cat in a cradle
hope my condition
is not fatal
Dreaming of stars
light centuries away
practicing lines
I’ll never say …
