Waiting here,
biting my knuckles, anxiously
awaiting a phone call: needing
your voice to tell me that it's
alright.

Waiting here,
in our split personality apartment
that's now only me, without you it
doesn't quite feel like home
anymore.

Waiting here,
a sappy romantic flick flashing,
but not registering, before my eyes.
I don't even like them, but they
make me feel closer to you.

Waiting here,
Equally dreading and needing the
phone to ring. This room is like a
line of solitaire and I'm the only red
card on the screen.

Waiting here,
clutching the monograph teddy you
gave me, seconds from breaking down,
only to have my universe shattered
(O, how fragile it was!) by a ring.

Waiting here,
heart racing – suddenly leaping as my
hands fumble the receiver, instantly
settling at the sound of your voice:
"Alice, it's Vanessa, I was in a wreck
but I'm alright."

Leaving now,
the split-personality apartment, the
sappy romantic flick, the monograph
teddy and the skewed solitaire: none
of them matter anymore, now that I've
got you my world's restored.
