Dark and sullen
eye lacking life
head down
mouth dry and laboring
to take in breaths
to continue on
forget about talking

all is lost
hope is just a faded memory
smiles and laughter
moved on long ago
blank stares across the room
but the mind is working furiously

friends and family show concern
trying to reach them
to bring them home
their efforts fail
but not going unnoticed

the hollow eyes
no longer see happiness
darkness is all around
mumbling out words
barely heard

getting out of bed
requires all strength
you can summon
stumbling down the hall
now watching people interact
while leaning on the wall

T.V. blasting
people playing cards
but being alone
the isolation is calling
them back

sitting down
anxiety builds
hands grow sweaty
then all the sudden
someone tells a joke
you let a smile go

Not a big one
just a piece of humanity
forcing its way through
for a moment you feel enjoyment
for a split-second you alive
