We loved each other, we said, and kissed,
Not seeing the ghosts who had loved each other,
Whose arms still reached out through us.
They remembered the touch,
The lips that spoke in tongues,
The dark secrets given in kiss and caress.
We were but vessels for other hearts.

But in the dawn you woke to one
Who had loved your lover, but not you.
And you telephoned your husband
To pick you up at a K Mart lot
Where no ghosts could rise,
No voices could scream "Love!",
No memories could pull you back.

My car pulled into the parking lot.
His car loitered, engine ticking idly,
White plumes of exhaust rising
In the cold grey morning.
And you got out and walked towards it.
It was an exchange of prisoners
Or badly damaged merchandise.
