With a wasted breath of air I sigh,
The long rush escaping from my lungs.
I breathe in and out in slow rhythm,
Then release myself to float away.
I fly free of these worldly restraints
To glide my way through the crowds of life,
Seeing things I am not meant to see.

A baby cries in the dark of night,
Screaming on but no one seems to care.
I move closer to peer through the glass
To see the child in dirty cradle.
Mother’s laying on the floor asleep,
Needle shining deep inside her arm.
Welling sadness stabs into my heart.

I move further into the dark room.
Father’s sitting at the table here
Drowning his sorrows in a bottle.
No longer can he hear his child cry
For his mind is full of other screams
That just will not seem to go away.
The forgotten child soon stops his wail.

If I could cry the tears would now flow.
I float away from the house of death
And hope to find some happier place.
I glide into a darkened alley
To find a place to sort out my thoughts,
But even this is not meant to be.
A man is there in the gutter dead.

His eyes stare up at me unblinking,
The blood still pooling upon the ground.
His clothes are poor and his shoes are gone,
And I know this was the reason.
Horrified I float away from him.
I return to the body I left,
And there the tears I have start to flow.
