War Diaries
Day Five

Today I hope to find some humanity
We came to a village
That had seen the worst fighting
There was just nothing left
Burned homes were everywhere
People scraped by with anything they could find
Just to rebuild some part of their normal lives
I met a five year old girl
Who's parents were both killed
Her 75 year old grandfather now took care of her
Her smile and her laugh
Made me believe things were ok
A little piece of innocence
While the fires of battle burned around us
I wanted to stay to hold her forever
But the radio said IED.
