Will there come a day
When we hold hands on a twilit porch
And tell each other of the lives we have led
Each in the absence of the other
Full lives lacking only
Knowledge of the road not taken?

Will there come a day
When we talk without tears
Of everything that was not
And everything that might have been
When we smile at the goodness of life
And the sweetness of our affection
As though no time had passed
Though it be years, or more?

Will there come a day
When we decline to meet
For fear of feelings that might be rekindled
Or fear of feelings that might be no longer
Because memory is too dear
To risk erasure?

Never will there come a day
When I forget you
Though life take me where it may
For if I am alone
In a meadow, on a beach,
In a canyon, on a hillltop,
My hand will still find yours
I will kiss your waiting mouth
Our arms and hearts entwined
For when I am alone
I am never without you
Yesterday and today
And throughout what days may come.
