love once meant the world on a platter
love could conquer all
love used to stop the rain, clear the clouds, quiet thunder

now love comes on a styrofoam plate
now love hides like a coward
now love brings tornadoes, earthquakes and hurricanes

as a little girl love painted my rainbows
as a woman love gets me a few hours of contentment

I stand here wanting more than a glue that doesn’t hold
I cover myself with more than a windbreaker in the frigid cold

my walls are too high to scale
my scars mar the beauty that was me
so I hide from the world and remember what love used to be
