It was a harmless diversion
some free-time play
became an obsession
a need each day

then came the business trip
while your coworkers flew
something happened there,
an attraction grew

since this trip took place,
you "work late" a lot
would you rather see his face
than mine, the one that you've got?

i could sense in your words
little deceptions and lies
you frantically close e-mails to him,
each time i walk by

so many cell phone calls
when you think i didn't know
who makes phone calls from outside
when temperatures are low?

you've not been yourself
in the months since then
don't feel like husband and wife,
more like roommates or friends

we are no longer intimate
like the loving kind
do you give yourself to him
with your body or your mind?

your bag was on the floor
imagine my shock and surprise
when right there in plain sight
a bag of sex lubes, right in front of my eyes

i can't think of why
you need lube at work
i can only think
you are screwing that jerk

now it all falls into place
the soiling of the dove
did you see his face
the last time we made love?

i know some things
i've said and done
have made you hate me
made you want to run

i hope none of this is true
maybe the ramblings of a fevered mind
if it's true i must have failed you
more than one time

what are you getting from him
that you're not getting from me?
i try so hard all of the time
i gave up "i" in favor of "we"

i don't know how to end this
is our life together over too?
despite all of our problems
my priority is you
if you'd be happier without me
you have to let me know
with a sigh and a heavy heart
i will reluctantly go

i love you enough
to go away
if that's what you want,
i'll go today
