When I was seventeen, I won honourable mention in a poetry contest and was published in a journal at the local university. My poem was entitled ‘Who am I?’ You would think that by the age of forty-three, with six children, a couple of careers and two marriages under my belt, I would have figured that out by now. The truth is though that I have come to accept that we never really know anything in this life, because the moment we have the answers, life changes the question. What follows is a free verse response from my adult self to that young woman.

Who am I?
The question is never that simple, young lady.
Each day we become the person we must be
To meet the challenges of that unique day.
When tomorrow comes, someone new we will be.

Who am I?
One moment I’m mother
The next I’m wife
Almost never am I
Just me in this life.

Who am I?
It doesn’t really matter
What will I do
With this one day
Is the measure true.

Who am I?
So go forth
And give it a try
Each new thing and person you meet
Will the answer bring, by and by.
