It's not as if we had some grand affaire
That burned out and made ashes of us both.
We've been good friends, if nothing more, for years,
But lately I've been thinking about you.
You're not involved with anyone these days,
The last I heard, and neither am I, so
I'm gathering my nerve to just suggest
We give each other's eyes a second glance.

We're friends; and friends are sometimes hard to find.
A solid base -- and, well, you just can't say
How many mansions might be built on that,
And we can build together on that trust.
If we can't scream our passion to the stars
That's fine: I'll save it all for you.
