Although you may not know it,
And I'm keeping it that way,
I see you in the mornings,
And glimpse you in the day.
I long to ask you questions,
Of how, and when, and why,
But mostly I would ask you,
Take you out, can I.
I circle round the problem,
Thinking what to do,
But deep down I am worried,
About what I'd say to you.
I'm sure to make a mess of it,
And say what I don't mean,
But if I just say nothing,
Who knows what might have been.
So now you know my problem,
And I know that it sounds dense,
But when I need to say the words,
I can't make any sense.
I'll mumble something fatuous,
I'll cringe and look away,
I'll give up pretty quickly,
And try another day.
So if you catch me staring,
And I can't return your glance,
You'll know what I was thinking,
And that I've blown another chance.
Perhaps I'll find the courage,
And ask you for a date,
But knowing how my luck goes,
It'll be much too late.
I don't ask for your pity,
And I can't ask for you to wait,
Because you'll never know this,
And this will be our fate.
Because I'll never have the words,
So you will never know,
How deeply run my feelings,
And how I love you so.
So although you'll never know it,
I'll glimpse you through the day,
I'll rarely ever speak to you,
And I'm keeping it that way.
