Zhaozhuang Woman

The young woman from Zhaozhuang
has eyes more beautiful than the moon.
Bare feet damp with water and pale
without the stockings of the middle class.
A country woman with flawless skin,
this one steers her boat for pay.
Springtime dances in her face
as she smiles to strolling passersby.
She sings whenever I stop to watch, then
quickly turns away, so coy, pretending shyness.
The waters of the lake reflect the moonlight,
while my mind remembers that day.
The woman with lips as sweet as plum wine
I see her face that trembles in the ripples.
