24 Hours

I remembered something that didn't register earlier that morning. I don't know that ‘Joanna' had actually opened the pendant but knew of the ‘nice' picture' inside it.

Finally, the file reached the last scene. In it a dark haired, attractive petite woman sat in a chair with the camera on her as she told us, the viewers, that she had killed Patrick Knowles after being his lover for six years. He had told her he had found someone else and fallen in love with her and that she intended to leave her husband and be with him.
She had that devilish grin again. It was the Joanna Knowles I had met earlier that morning. Her last words were succinct.

"Mr. Nelson, I am going to kill her for you, to spare you the trouble of all of this." She said as her parting words.

I sat there confused not knowing what to think and fearful at the same time. This was a seriously unhinged woman. One of the officers rose up and left the room only to return a couple minutes later. He opened a file with a handwritten letter on top.

"The woman's name was Michelle Rogan and we found her body earlier this afternoon after a neighbor called in a gunshot in her building. It is an apparent suicide. She claimed to be Joanna Knowles, the wife of Patrick Knowles. There was also a note on her person instructing us to go to another address with another inscription saying ‘Tell Mr. Nelson I am sorry but it had to be this way'.

"We called out a team to go to that address and we found another gunshot victim, this time a 38 year old wife and mother named Alyson Nelson who was married to a man named Carl Nelson. They had 3 children together. We had received the recusal letter from Richmond by that time so we called out an examiner from Lynchburg.

"I think the DVD along with the written letter for the perpetrator will close out the case. We want to thank you for coming down and I'm sure we will be in touch to close any loose ends."

We all shook hands and my attorney and I left the building and parted company promising to get together the next morning to close any open items.

Kim and the victim, Alyson, could have been sisters with their similar looks. Alyson's address is two streets over and closer to Langhorne than we are.
