Carol grew more and more nervous the closer they got to Lee's house. He told her it didn't make sense for her to waste money on an apartment when Abby wouldn't be living in the house any more, but Carol hadn't quite convinced herself Lee was right about that.

Lee turned into his driveway, pushed a button on his car's sun visor, drove into the three-car garage attached to the house, and shut off the motor.

"Well," he said, "we're here."

"Yeah." Carol swallowed hard. Now what?

They got out of the car. Lee led Carol into the house.

"According to Abby's note," Lee said, "she's gone to the cabin I own in the mountains. I talked to my lawyer today, and she drew up divorce papers that give that place to Abby, but leave this place to me. I'm hoping Abby won't contest that arrangement. I don't think she will, actually."

"Oh," Carol said. She was surprised and delighted to learn that Lee had already begun working on his divorce.

Inside, she found the house as lovely as it was outside. It was furnished in what might have been antiques or very good reproductions, and was obviously well cared for. While it wasn't exactly what Carol would have done, it did look comfortable.

"Come on upstairs," Lee said, "I'll show you to our room." He led the way up a long, winding staircase into a huge bedroom, the centerpiece of which was a king-sized four-poster bed.

Carol looked around, unable to believe how fancy the room was. Like the rest of the house, the bedroom looked very comfortable.

"Lee...this...this is really fantastic," Carol said.

"Thank you," Lee said. "Look around, make yourself at home."

Carol smiled at him. "All right," she said. She walked to the bedroom window and looked out. The yard behind the house was huge and contained an in-ground swimming pool. A brick barbecue sat at the edge of a field stone patio at one end of the pool, next to what had to be the pool house.

"You OK?" Lee's questions startled Carol and she turned.

"I...I think so..." She turned back to look out the window. "Your home it...it's fantastic."

"Thank you," Lee said.

A while later, Carol awoke, looked around, and realized Lee, wearing a bathrobe, was sitting at the foot of her bed, watching her. Realizing she'd awakened, he smiled. "I'm sorry I woke you," he said.

"I don't mind," Carol replied. "What time is it?"

"It's about ten," Lee said. "We were able to stabilize the patient for the night. We've got a gall bladder removal to do in the morning, though."
