She felt sad for Joe - she'd liked the old boy - but she'd seen death before. It didn't upset her.
She waited in the downstairs parlour 'til the people came. Pretty soon she was thinking about renting the house - about how she'd have to find another tenant now that Joe was gone.
She didn't think it'd be easy. It was funny, with housing so short, but she'd been trying to let the house next door, which she also owned, for a year. Plenty had come to look, but there'd been no takers. Some had expressed an interest, but they all cried off in the end.
It was a perfectly good house. She couldn't understand it.
When the ambulance came, she let them in and watched them take Joe away.
She went to the funeral a few days later. It was the least she could do, she said.

Interesting
So the whole story from the point where he first noticed the nurses moving in next door (weeks before he first watched Dark April masterbate) until he died on that last Wednesday afternoon was just a time warping dream that he had seconds before he died? Or did he actually see the Aprils weeks before he died and they were camping out watching over him like angels of death?
I liked the plot twist, but in my opinion you could have probably foreshadowed it better by throwing in details that readers only recognize in hindsight. It adds a nice Hitchcockian touch in my opinion. I love it when a story forces me to flip back and reread things realizing that the author "set me up" right from the beginning, but did it in such a smart way that I didn't see it coming. Its tough to do, but is amazing when it comes off well.
The play on the names, Mrs. Thursday coming on Friday, both Aprils born in April, etc were funny touches and nicely deflected from the sort of dark climax. Though I can only hope when my time comes I get ushered into the afterlife in such a nice way.more...
As I was reading it, I thought no guy could be that lucky. I was right! Good story though.
