The ambulance pulled up a minute later and paramedics rushed out with a gurney to get Meredith out of the car. It took them several minutes to get the door open. The paramedics slid Meredith onto the stretcher easily and loaded her in the ambulance. She took in the scene of the wreck as they were loading her, seeing her car with the driver's door bashed in and what must have been Jack's SUV, the front completely smashed in. There was broken glass everywhere.
The paramedics also loaded Jack into the ambulance, at his insistance. He was injured, too, but he really just wanted to be with her to make sure she was okay. Cop cars began circling the scene and blocking off the road to anyone who might come along. The paramedics shut the doors to the ambulance and turned on the sirens, driving quickly but safely to get Meredith to the hospital.
Once there, a flurry of doctors and nurses began assessing the injuries of Meredith and Jack. They were taken to different parts of the ER. Meredith's injuries were far more serious than the ones Jack sustained; she suffered from two broken ribs, a broken ankle, a concussion, amnesia and numerous cuts and scrapes, many requiring stitches. Jack, on the other hand, suffered a broken arm and a few cuts, most of which looked worse than they were because of the blood.
After Meredith's condition was stabilized, she was taken out of the ER and to a normal patient room. The nurses gave her pain medication and adjusted her bed to allow her to rest. The police had found her purse in her car and brought it, along with other personal things like her cell phone, to the ER, allowing doctors to establish her identity. Meredith still didn't remember anything that happened before the crash, though. The nurse in charge of Meredith browsed through her cell phone, trying to locate a person to call to help take care of Meredith.
She looked in her recent calls log and called the first number listed, Steven's.
