Dani and the Bull Ch. 07

"I was scared; I didn't know you would react to hearing what Granny had told me."

"We would have worked it out together son, helped you through it. But then it was not just the demon who made you leave, you had to find your other half did you not?"

Bull looked at Dani, "oh yeah Dad, wait till you all meet her, I know you're going to love her as much as I do..."

"Of course we will. You know she invaded the dreams of all of us the other night, but I think it was more of momma Maylene's magic at work, she is a pretty little thing, all that amber colored hair and those eyes, she is the blood of our old friend Charlie Lazarus is she not?"

"His granddaughter, her dad is Jack Lazarus; I understand you two met a time or two."

"Oui, I remember Jack. He has a wife named Helen, but that was before you were born, and they had only one son, a boy named Jericho if I remember right. But that was a long time ago, and once Charles died, he didn't come back. Claire and Jessie have not visited in quite some time either. Perhaps when you come back, you will stop and visit them in New Orleans."

"Dani was thinking about going to visit them later in the summer. She was only there once, right after her grandfather died."

"Yes, I remember the funeral, you were gone by then, but you do know that you and Dani have met before do you not?"

That surprised Bull. "No, when did we meet?"

"When she was just a baby, not more than one or two, Charles was very ill and they came to see him. We were invited up to visit as well, and you kept looking at her. When we asked you why, you simply shrugged and ignored the question. I think even then you knew that somehow your lives would intermingle. The hour is late son, and I know your momma and momma Maylene wish to talk to you. But you will call again soon I hope. It has been too long..."

"I will dad...I promise."

The reason for his calling was put on hold as he talked to his mother and grandmother and when he was finally able to hang up, he looked at Dani. "Dad said you and I met before this, when your family came to visit before your grandpa died, they were at the house in New Orleans as well."

Helen smiled. "I remember that, but that couldn't have been you Bull, you were so shy and quiet, and you simply spent all your time looking at Dani, as if you had never seen a baby before."

He shrugged. "To be honest, I don't remember. If Dani was a baby, I would have been about ten or eleven so I would have been more interested in the yard and being in town then why I was so fascinated with her."

Mike grinned. "I think I know why, it had something to do with your younger brother, he told grandma that when he grew up he was going to marry the baby, and I remember something being said by one of the other ladies that no, she was intended for someone else so he couldn't marry her. I think you looked over at her and asked who she was intended for and the lady said her future was too cloudy to tell..."

Jack nodded. "Lord, I had forgotten all about that. We were all so upset that dad was dying and there wasn't all the things there are now to help him. Helen, when we went to the funeral, wasn't Pierre and Massie there too? And their one son kept looking over at Dani with this big grin and all?"

Dani's mom nodded. "Now that you mention it, I think there was a boy who kept on doing that. I know I remember her coming and she was crying because he had kissed her out by the big tire swing in the back yard, and she hadn't liked it..."

Bull looked at Dani. "I don't suppose you remember which brother it was..."

She closed her eyes and it was clear she was trying to remember. "Okay, you're twenty eight, so you would have been ten when I was born, so five years later...well that lets you out. Which one of your brothers would have been closest to me in age?"

Bull didn't have to think very hard. "Andre. The little pain the ass...he would have done something like that. He's only 21 now. Remind me to kick his ass when I see him again, taking advantage of my girl..." He grinned. "Not that I need an excuse, he always was a pain."

"Maybe, but think of my honor Bull..." She teased him as she looked at him. "He tried to take advantage of your woman at a very young age."

Chuckling, he pulled her up onto his lap. "So he did, I will definitely have to kick his ass and tell him he does not touch other people's toys." Bending his head, he kissed her softly. "And a very nice, soft toy you are too. One I have to be extra careful not to break."

She snuggled down in his arms and rested her head on his shoulder. "Breaking me is not the problem, wearing me out is possible, but not breaking..."

Jack grinned and shook his head. No, Bull would never break his daughter. He might love her to death, but never hurt her intentionally. How had he ever thought the things he had thought about the big man holding his daughter so gently? They were perfect together. Looking at Helen, he knew that his wife had known all along this was how it was suppose to be. She had been right, only a man who was the equal of Dani's father and brothers could have won her heart so fast. Jack felt a little ashamed to admit that Bull was not only his equal, in many ways, he was his better. Bull had protected his daughter from Nick from the minute he had met her and he would do all he could in his power to protect her in the future.

Bull was right about a lot of things, the one being that the family had to have a plan to protect not only Dani, but his precious Helen and Katie from Nick and his brother while they were at work. Pigpen and Andi had been sent to stay with their other grandparents for the duration of the visit, and while Jack had seen no reason for it, at the insistence of Helen, both Sue and Annie had been warned to watch out for Nick and Jessie as well. He knew that sometime in the past there had been trouble between Nick and Helen and her two friends, Sylvie Belton and Janice West, but she had been reluctant to talk about it and he had never pushed. Now he regretted not knowing more than just the bare facts. Maybe it was time he talked to her and learned just what it was that made Helen so worried about Nick.

He looked at the clock and nodded to himself. "Bull, I want you and Mike to stay home tomorrow, I'm not saying anything is going to happen, but I want you to keep an eye out for any trouble, all you have to do is call and the rest of us will be home as soon as we can get here. I don't know if Nick was talking out the bottle today or not, but I don't want to take any chances."

Bull nodded and Dani looked at him as Jack started to stand up. "Don't worry dad, I'll know if he's within fifty feet of the place."

"And how will you know that...?"

"Every since the day he tried to kiss me, I've had like a warning bell inside me, it's worse when he's close to me, but I start to get sick and feel like I want to puke if he even steps foot on the property."

That surprised Jack, but he nodded. "Good, keep those warning systems alert Dani, and you let your brother or Bull know if it starts up. Mike, you know where I keep the key to the gun safe, they try anything, shoot to kill..." He heard a gasp from his wife. "Sorry Helen, you've tried to warn me in the past, and I ignored you, I won't make that mistake again." He looked at his family. "Okay, it's late, I am going to bed, Helen, and we need to talk, upstairs..."

The family knew that he had spoken and gradually everyone went to bed. Dani found she was curious about what her dad wanted to talk to her mom about. She might have thought it was just his way of telling his wife he was horny and for them to go make love, except she had seen the look in his eye, he had really wanted to talk.

Bull had seen it as well, and wondered if it had something to do with what the Sheriff had mentioned. Well, if it was important, he would hear about it, he was sure.
