I'd recommend reading the original "David and Kate" though I suppose it's not entirely necessary. I'd like to thank my sweet sexy friend Monicker for his assistance editing this chapter. Enjoy!

*

Kate shook her head, pulling herself out of the tenth daydream of the morning. She was still having a hard time believing what had happened the night before. It was only 11am, but she was fairly sure that she'd replayed the entire day and evening in her head, in its entirety, at least a half dozen times. And she couldn't keep the smile off of her face each time she did.

She felt like a goddess. Her body was still humming from David's soft touches, gentle rubs, and more satisfyingly demanding thrusts. Each time an image from the previous night flashed though her mind, she felt a sweet warmth pool in her body and leave her breathless. He had made her feel like the most sensual, desired creature he'd ever had the good fortune to encounter, and she was hungry for more. Kate knew that she had a little extra swagger in her step as she walked into her office, and she couldn't help but wonder if others were picking up on her changed attitude.

Kate didn't sleep around. She hardly even dated. She typically had no patience for the games and the run around that dating brought into her life. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she knew that she'd have to actually take part in it one day if she wanted to find someone to share her life with, but for the time being she really wasn't all that interested. She would go out with her friends from time to time and flirt and dance and drink a little, but that was usually enough to satisfy any curiosity she had about finding a guy. It never took long when she did go out for her to remember why she so thoroughly enjoyed staying in.

Her partial lack of a dating life was a big reason why the encounter with David had her so thrown. She couldn't help but wonder if it meant anything or if it really was just a nice distraction for him from his mess of a real life. She was fairly certain that she could be happy just being that distraction for a while.

Each time she thought about David as she pretended to work she had the same torn reaction. She wanted more of him, but she was having a hard time convincing herself that it was ok to allow herself to explore with him. There were several red flags; however, the way he had made her feel the night before was most certainly worth overlooking a few little red flags.

Kate's internal struggle continued as she took a break from her editing to grab a quick lunch. She thought for a moment about the turkey sandwich that was waiting for her in the fridge and grabbed her purse, deciding to have lunch outside of the office.

As Kate walked along, she almost felt guilty for sneaking out that morning, but she kept telling herself that she had to get to work. David had taken the week off to try to sort some things out, so he had the luxury of sleeping in. She'd left a note on her kitchen table telling him to help himself to anything and that she'd see him soon. Kate blushed as she thought of the three previous versions of the note she had tucked away in her purse now. She just couldn't quite find the right words. She had gone through a few options: "Thanks for the amazing sex, help yourself to some fruit.", or "Hey remember how you're still married, get out of my house.", or "I've never felt how you made me feel. Thanks."

Ultimately she had a hard time deciding on a proper note because she really had no idea how she felt about the whole encounter. Part of her thought that they should keep it light and enjoy it. They both were clearly in need of a good romp and could apparently be great outlets for each other. But another part of her thought that was extremely dangerous. How long can two people who get along have amazing sex without the thought of something more creeping in?

She was not even close to ready to let him into her life like that. Kate had her own reasons for being tentative about getting involved, and the man was still married. This thought bothered her the most. Sure, his wife had left, but what if she came back? What if she regretted her decision and had a moment of clarity and showed up back at David's home tomorrow begging for forgiveness and wanting to come home? Of course David would have to give it a chance. Kate refused to see herself as the type of person who would cause a marriage to end, and she certainly didn't want to be David's excuse for its demise either.

She shook her head as she walked down the busy street to a little deli. As much as she didn't want to, as much as she wanted what they had to just blissfully continue in a self contained little world, she knew she had to talk to him about it. She pulled her phone out and searched in her contact list for David's cell. He had made her take it the previous night at dinner before she had blindly and foolishly kissed him.

She took a seat on a bench outside of the deli and felt her stomach tighten when she heard the first ring.

*******

David stretched luxuriously from the tips of his fingers to the tips of his toes in Kate's warm bed. He rolled onto his back, smiling to himself as he glanced at the clock. He could not remember the last time he had peacefully slept in until 11am. He snuck a peek across the bed, half hoping Kate would be there, but he knew that she would have gotten up early and gone to work. He wished he had asked her to take another day off with him, but he knew better.

He had a hunch that Kate was the type of woman who would have a very hard time changing her life and her routines for anyone, let alone a man she hardly knew. David pulled himself into a sitting position and propped himself up against the head board.

As he glanced around the bedroom, he couldn't help the flashes of the previous night's activities that slid through his mind. The more he thought about it, the more he ached for the look that he saw in her eyes. It was so very intense and filled with longing. He kept picturing Kate after she came for him. He had to see it again. He wanted to make her look that way again and again and again.

He felt himself harden at the thought and he enjoyed the feeling of Kate's heavy sheets rubbing against his now sensitive body. He closed his eyes and tried to calm his body. "Relax man," he told himself, "you're acting like a sex starved teenager. What is wrong with you?"

His lust for Kate surprised David, though he supposed it really shouldn't. It wasn't as though his marriage had been sexless. They had had a pretty healthy sex life, even up until the end.

As his thoughts drifted to the end of his marriage he began to make a mental list. He had already called his lawyer on Saturday and had an afternoon appointment with him today. After that he was planning on calling his realtor to talk about putting the house on the market. He didn't want the burden or the reminder of their home anymore.

He felt like he wanted to tell Kate about his plans. He wanted her to know that it really was over and he really was moving forward, regardless of how fast it seemed. He knew that she would tell him that he needed time, and that was probably true. But the thought of denying what he wanted with Kate seemed silly to him. He wanted her. Simple. And he knew she wanted him. For David, Kate was a very pleasant reminder that his life could still be new and exciting. He just wasn't quite sure he could express his thoughts to her without making it sound like he just wanted sex from her.

As he blinked the sleep from his eyes he glanced out the bedroom door and across the hall to the bathroom. He tried to remember his morning after etiquette. It had been a lot of years since he had woken up alone in a woman's home. He figured he was at least allowed to shower and have a cup of coffee. He smiled to himself imagining Kate scolding him if she knew he was questioning what he was allowed to do in her house. "You just came in me," he imagined her saying with a smirk in her voice, "of course you can use my fucking shower."

Her direct way of cutting right to the chase was something that David really appreciated about her. Even through all of their coffee shop discussions, Kate had never sugar coated anything. When she thought he was wrong, she let him know. In a world where a lot of people kissed his ass and did what he said, it was very refreshing to spend time with someone completely opposite. She was delightfully unaware of just how straightforward and honest she was. It was as if it had never occurred to her to act any other way. And he liked her all the more for it.

David took a quick shower, forcing himself to ignore the throb the scent of her soap sent coursing through his body. He was again surprised by how quickly and forcefully his desire for her sprang up. He was already thinking about all of the things he wanted to do with her the next time he got her into bed. David had always been a very sexual man, but this was the first time in his memory when he had such a singular fascination with one woman. If he had thought about it any harder, it would have scared him just a little.

He made his way into the kitchen, dressed in his clothes from the previous day, and looked for the coffee maker and a mug, smiling to himself as he read Kate's note. "Mmm," he thought to himself, "anything huh Kate?" He couldn't help but wonder if she meant to entice him even further with the note or if it was all just part of the raw sexiness she seemed to naturally exude unaware.

As he stood waiting for the coffee to brew he checked the time. He had enough time to go home, grab a quick lunch, change, and make it back into the city for his afternoon appointments. He cringed a little thinking about how unpleasant the visit with his lawyer was going to be, but he wanted it all to go smoothly. If he knew his wife at all, she would want to just split it all evenly and move on.

As the smell of coffee filled Kate's small kitchen, David's mind wandered back to his wife. She was a good person and he cared about her, but they just didn't have much of a relationship anymore. They both worked way too much and neither one of them put any effort into keeping their lives connected. They had gotten to the point over the past few months where they hardly even shared the details of their days with each other.

He wondered momentarily if perhaps she'd already found someone new. He tried to muster up some jealousy at the thought, and did manage a tad, but if that was the case then mostly he was just happy she had someone to fill the void he was sure he'd left her with long before her weekend goodbye.

David poured a mug full of coffee and was reaching into Kate's fridge when he felt his phone begin to vibrate in his pocket. He set the milk on the counter and reached to answer his phone, the pace of his heart increasing when he saw who it was.

"Kate," he smiled warmly as he answered.

"Hi David," she said simply in greeting, but he could hear the smile in her voice as well.

Kate fought to keep the smile out of her voice as it crept in. She wanted to be serious for a moment without flirting with him, but the second she heard him drawl her name, she knew that would be close to impossible.

"You're not still in bed are you?" she asked with a slow smile.

"No. But I can get back in if you'd like to pass the time."

Kate bit her bottom lip, keeping the moan she felt in her gut from escaping her lips. "No, you better stay out of my bed."

She heard his soft chuckle and was relieved that he didn't seem to think she was sounding too harsh, but she also heard a little inkling of fear in his voice when he said, "I don't think you really want me to stay out of your bed entirely."

She shook her head, knowing he couldn't see her, but didn't answer him.

Instead she said, "David, I was hoping that we could meet for dinner tonight. I feel like we need to talk about last night a little bit and I know that it was nothing and it was just one night and just a distraction for you and it was incredible, I mean completely incredible, but I just..."

"Kate," he cut her off in a commanding tone, "slow down. You're rambling. I agree, but it wasn't nothing. I'd love to have dinner with you tonight."

His calm tone was disarming. She couldn't tell if he meant that it wasn't nothing because he just wanted more of her body or if it wasn't nothing because he wanted more of them together in any capacity. Even more troubling for Kate was the fact that she really didn't care. She just wanted to know what his expectations were. With that realization, Kate felt the power shift in her mind subtly to David. He had no idea, of course, but for a second she found herself willing to be whatever he needed, whatever he wanted her to be. That thought scared the hell out of her.

"Ok David," she said softly. "I'll meet you somewhere?"

"No, I'll pick you up. How's 7ish sound?"

"Sounds good. I'll see you then. And I..." she trailed off.

David waited a moment for her to finish her thought until it became clear that she wasn't going to.

"I'll see you tonight Kate."

"See you." Kate shook her head and shoved her phone into her bag, feeling very annoyed with herself. She had wanted to come across as light and breezy, just two friends chatting, but somehow the conversation and slipped into the realm of intense. Whatever happened, she did not want him to think that she needed him or had to see him. The last thing Kate wanted was to tie herself to someone, even if that person could shake her to the core with just a kiss. She blushed at the thought and quickly hurried into the deli to finish her already too long lunch.

*******

Kate bustled around trying to be ready by 7 o'clock. She had gotten home an hour earlier and had just enough time to shower and change. She was already on her third dress. The first one had been far too casual, though she didn't know where they were going. The second had been way too sexy. She already felt a little bit like a sex toy with David so she didn't really want to gift wrap herself and advertise it. The third dress seemed to pass as she looked at herself in the full length mirror in her closet. It was deep blue, which brought out her eyes, and it wrapped around her body settling in a v-neck position that accentuated her curves without making them look obscene. Most importantly, she felt comfortable in it.

She heard her doorbell and scampered to the door in bare feet.

She smiled warmly in greeting when she saw David standing in dark jeans and a simple clean crisp white button up shirt. Her eyes twinkled as she took in the sight of him. His warm presences filled up her doorway and she couldn't help but inhale the scent of him. He gave her a little smile which quickly faded to a much lustier look as his eyes travelled down and then back up her body. "Good lord..." he murmured softly.

"Come in," she beckoned with a flick of her head, resisting the urge to kiss him in greeting, "I just need to grab shoes, then we can go."

David correctly read the look in her eye and he gave her a little devilish smirk as he tucked his hands in his pockets and strolled into her living room. "Mmhm," he toned softly watching her.

She spun around and headed back to her room mentally choosing a pair of shoes from her closet, expecting David to wait in living room.

Instead, she heard his voice right behind her as she slipped into her closet, grabbing a pair of dark red heels.

"You look beautiful," he said simply, his warm breath playing on the back of her neck. She closed her eyes, still with her back to him, and composed herself and her reaction before she turned around.

"Thanks," she smiled as she closed her closet door behind her, "you look very handsome yourself."

He took a step back and leaned against the doorway of her bedroom, looking like leaving her room was the last thing on his mind. Their eyes met and Kate saw the hunger lurking in his. She knew in that moment that she could slip into his arms and pull him into her bed for hours and hours. She knew if she did that then they wouldn't have to go to dinner and talk about what they were doing and why. It was a very tempting thought.

But Kate broke their gaze, reaching onto her bed for her purse, and walked to the door. She stood a few feet back from him, the look on her face clearly telling him that it was time to go. He hesitated for a moment, gave her a playful frown and finally conceded. He stepped aside, letting her lead the way to the front door. David bit his tongue, wanting to say something about how he'd much prefer to follow her, especially in that dress. Something in her eyes made him hold his tongue and he was once again torn. He wondered how he could make her understand what she did to him without making it sound like it was either just sex, or, even worse, something more. He did not want to just sleep with her, but he also knew that he couldn't tell her that he wanted more. He played with his empty ring finger, an old habit that he didn't think would go away any time soon, and thought about what he was going to say to her at dinner.

As they strolled down Kate's block heading out towards the busier main street, David offered her his arm, which she happily took, sliding her arm through the crook of his. They walked in surprisingly comfortable silence, neither wanting to be the first to speak.

She glanced over at him, the urge to clear the air suddenly strong.

"David," she started softly, "I... I am not even sure where to begin. I guess I am mostly just curious to know what you want. I mean, I know there is a lot going on with you right now and as much as I don't mind being a distraction from it all, the last thing I want is to be an excuse for you to turn your back on something you shouldn't."

She let her words hang in the air for a moment and then snuck a glance over at him.

She saw him looking thoughtful, composing his words before he spoke. "Well just jump right into it without much of a preamble. Kate, oh Kate," he sighed with a smile on his face that slowly faded. "I wish I had a clear simple answer for you, but I don't. I do know that I loved spending yesterday with you and whatever it is that I was feeling last night with you made me wake up this morning wanting more. I woke up wanting more of that feeling and more of you."

Kate nodded and felt her heart pound in response. "I agree David. I mean, shoot, how could I not. Last night was... I want to say amazing, but that sounds too mediocre for what we did. I don't think I've ever connected like that with someone so powerfully, regardless of how long I've known him."

"I also know that the last thing you need right now is to develop, or even think you are developing, feelings for someone."

At her last words, David stopped walking. He turned rather abruptly to face Kate, his eyes wide with argument. Instead of voicing his disagreement, he leaned in quickly and captured her lips with his, kissing her deeply and intensely. He softly but needily sucked her bottom lip into his mouth, tasting her sweetness. His tongue slid along her lips and wound its way in, sliding along her tongue, twirling around it. Before Kate could fully comprehend what was happening, she was kissing him back, her hands gripping his shoulders as she felt his hands slide up and down her back, brushing across her bottom with each swoop.

She'd all but forgotten what she had said as he broke the kiss, stepping back under a tree in the setting sun.

"Do you think you and I have any control over what may or may not develop between us?" he asked, his voice husky and low.

She blushed, knowing he proved his point so easily with just a kiss. Her lips quirked into a smile and all she could do was shrug.

"Of course we don't have any control over it, but," she trailed off for a moment, "but we can try to keep it under control especially if where it might lead is bad for one or both of us."
