Mom's hospital bills.
The ones that I had nearly finished paying off.
The ones I had paid with money that shouldn't exist.
"Neil, are you okay?"
I smiled. "I think I ate too much."
His eyes were kind and worried. "I know you're worried about the bills. You've been doing way too much for a kid your age. I'm gonna get you into some GED classes next semester. You can catch up. You don't gotta be the man of the house anymore. I'm here."
I laughed softly. "Ben's the man of the house. He's the one that's gonna pay the bills when he gets a real job."
Toby laughed. He lowered his voice slightly, so Ben wouldn't hear. "Ben wasn't the one who kept this family together."
I sighed and hugged my big brother.
"I'm here now. I'm going to take care of everything now."
Yeah.
He was here now. And he was going to be impossible to fool. I faked a smile, and felt my food stir uneasily in my stomach.
