"What do you want Lil?" Eli asked impatiently, hiding his body behind the partially open door.
"To check and make sure you and Emma haven't killed each other," Lily said with a small smile.
"Lily, we're adults," Eli said as patiently as possible. Lily grinned as she saw Emma come up behind Eli, her hair mussed, wearing one of Eli's button down shirts.
"Doing adult things I see," Lily teased.
"Good bye Lily," Eli said with a good natured smile before he closed the door in his sister's face.
"That was rude," Emma commented with a sly smile.
"She'll get over it," Eli assured her.
"Don't you have a doctor's appointment?" Emma asked with a squeal as Eli lifted her into his arms and headed back towards the bedroom.
"Not until one thirty," Eli muttered.
"Eli, it's nearly noon," Emma told him. Eli looked surprised, it had been years since he had slept that long. "We can play later," Emma added. Eli pouted but walked into the bathroom to take a shower.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Well?" Emma asked when Eli walked out of his doctor's office. Eli just smiled and walked towards the exit. "Eli!" Emma exclaimed. She followed him to the car and climbed in the passenger seat. "Eli, what the hell?" Emma asked, crossing her arms over her chest.
Eli turned to face her, the expression on his face reminded her of a kid in a candy store with an unlimited amount of money to spend. "My blood work shows I'm in remission!" Eli exclaimed. Emma grinned and threw her arms around him. "That's great! We should call your sister," Emma said.
"I will. Later," Eli promised, giving Emma a mischievous grin. Emma blushed as Eli started the car and headed for home.
"Em?" Eli called a few weeks later as he walked through the door. Emma appeared in the doorway between the living room and the hallway. "What's wrong? You sounded pretty upset," Eli wanted to know.
Emma sighed. "I couldn't get the prescription."
Eli looked confused. "Prescription?" he asked.
"The birth control," Emma murmured. "I couldn't get it."
"What? Why?" Eli asked, confused.
"Because it's too late for it," Emma answered.
"Emma, stop talking in riddles and tell me what's the matter damn it," Eli snapped.
Emma took a step back. "I can't be put on birth control because I'm already pregnant," Emma said softly. The look on Eli's face made her take a second step back. "Eli, I'm sorry," Emma murmured.
"Damn it Emma! You knew I didn't want children!" Eli snapped. "That I didn't want to subject another generation to this horror and nightmare!" Eli was so angry he could hardly see straight.
"I didn't plan this," Emma reminded him.
"That's supposed to mean what to me right now?" Eli wanted to know.
"Eli ..." Emma stepped forward, reached a hand towards him.
"Stay away from me Emma, just stay the fuck away!" Eli shouted.
"Eli, I'm sorry," Emma whispered.
"Just leave me alone!" Eli yelled. Emma took another step towards him and Eli pushed her away.
"I'm sorry," Emma said softly as she turned and walked out the door.
"Eli, have you seen Emma lately?" Lily asked a few days later.
"No," Eli said curtly.
"No? I thought she was living with you," Lily murmured.
"She was. Now she isn't," Eli answered.
"What happened?" Lily wanted to know.
"Nothing Lil, just drop it," Eli said, getting up from his sister's table and walking away.
"Mom, mom, guess what!" Mia shouted, as she ran into the house. Lily looked up from changing Nasya's diaper.
"What?" Lily asked.
"I got in!" she exclaimed.
"To which school?" Lily asked.
"The Julliard School of Dance!" Mia shrieked.
"That's wonderful! Have you told John yet?" Lily asked, giving her daughter a hug.
"He was with me when I got the letter," Mia said. "There was a letter for you too, from Emma," Mia added. She held the envelope out to her mother. Lily handed Nasya off to her oldest daughter and tore the letter open. "Is Emma okay?" Mia wanted to know.
"I'm going to strangle your uncle. Dinner's in the oven, if your dad gets home before I do, go ahead and eat," Lily said, grabbing her jacket and purse from the coat rack, walked out the door and slammed it behind her.
~~~~~~~~
"You fucking jackass!" Lily shouted, walking into her brother's office and slamming the door shut.
"What's up your butt?" Eli asked.
"This!" Lily slammed the letter on Eli's desk. "You threw Emma out because she was pregnant?" Lily asked, surprised that her brother could be that big of a douche bag.
"She knew full well I didn't want kids and didn't see fit to tell me she wasn't on birth control!" Eli exclaimed.
"And you apparently didn't see fit to ask her if she was. She was a fucking virgin Eli! Something I'm sure you know better than I!" Lily seethed.
"That's besides the point," Eli said, rubbing his forehead, looking down at the letter without reading it.
"Read the fucking letter Eli," Lily said, her voice low and angry.
"Why? She's just bitching about things to you," Eli said, rubbing the bridge of his nose.
"She needs you Eli, and she needs you now. She didn't write to bitch. She wrote because she needs help." Lily sighed and forced her brother to look at her. "Do you love Emma?" Lily asked.
"Yes," Eli admitted.
"Then get the stick out of your ass and go be with the mother of your child," Lily advised.
"I don't want to bring a child into this world, not when there is a very high chance that the child will have cancer," Eli protested. Lily sighed.
"You may not have to," she told him.
"What?" Eli looked up sharply.
"Read the damn letter," Lily repeated before walking out of the office.
"You missed dinner," Tyler said when Lily walked in the door.
"I know, I'm sorry," Lily sighed, rubbing the back of her neck before placing her jacket and purse on the coat rack.
"What happened?" Tyler wanted to know, he followed Lily into the kitchen and watched her pull left overs onto a plate and pop it in the microwave.
"Emma almost had a miscarriage," Lily said with a sad sigh.
"I didn't even know she's pregnant," Tyler said in surprise.
"Neither did I. She sent me a letter, explaining why she left the way she did and to apologize to Eli for her. She's nearly four months now," Lily groaned. The timer on the microwave dinged and she pulled the plate of food out of the microwave.
"Is she okay? What happened? And if she's pregnant, why isn't Eli stepping up to the plate?" Tyler asked. Lily shook her head as she sat down at the kitchen table..
"Eli is being an ass. He doesn't want to risk passing on the Cancer gene to anyone else, and while I understand that desire, it's insanity. He says he loves her, but if he does, he has one hell of a way of showing it. And as for what happened, she didn't go into detail; she just said something about a virus. She's still in the hospital, but she says she's okay," Lily said, taking a bite of pot roast.
"Do you need me to go kick Eli's ass?" Tyler asked, sitting down across from her.
"No. I gave him the letter and we'll wait and see," Lily answered.
