Ghosts Ch. 07

Lex cocked his head, and I had that eerie feeling again that he could pick up on some of my thoughts.

"You're such a surprise, you know that? It takes a lot to surprise me, at my age." He tipped my chin up and studied be, his expression thoughtful, then he smiled. "You were worth every penny."

I didn't really know how to respond to that, so I didn't. Lex pointed at the tablet.

"That's yours."

Then he opened the fridge, which now displayed an impressive amount of esterwine. The kind you saw advertised on commercials, not whatever fancy kind he'd had in there before.

"And so is this. It's human- or Feeder strength"-he closed the fridge door- "so its not going to get you nearly as fucked up as the vampire-strength stuff you consumed earlier, but it's decent enough." He looked pointedly at my wrist. "That identifier will allow you to buy it yourself." He smiled at me a little wickedly. "I'm not going to make you face me sober. I don't think you'll last long if I do."

Why did he have to qualify everything with menace? Still, thank God in heaven that he was providing me with drugs.

"Can I have one now?" I blurted.

He looked amused, shook his head at me and chuckled. "Do you really think that's a good idea?"

I hesitated, and assessed him. "Are you telling me that I can't have one?"

He laughed again, and cocked his head, then shrugged and walked over to the armchair, resuming his boneless lounging. He changed the channel to something else, some other Vamp station, and yawned impressively.

"Knock yourself out. As long as it doesn't affect your ability to load the dishwasher."
