"This, uh..." I began.
"...Isn't what it looks like?" she finished for me.
Her smile widened.
"That's funny. It looks to me like you're waiting for somebody," she said.
Why wouldn't she just turn and leave? If anything, I thought she'd be as embarrassed as I was. But she seemed to be enjoying this. What kind of psycho was Katie sharing an apartment with?
"I was, uh... I mean, we were, uh... Me and Katie... We had a thing. We were gonna—"
But I stopped short. My breath caught in my throat. Against all odds, Sarah was walking towards me.
She looked down at me, raising one skeptical eyebrow.
Wait a minute... I suddenly thought. Why did she head straight for Katie's room as soon as she got back in?
With awful finality, I realized the answer.
Sarah put a hand to her mouth and laughed out loud, as if amazed at her good fortune. She shook her head.
"I can't believe you fell for that!" she exclaimed.
