When Bridget got up, Don glanced over at her but didn't say anything. His pride was still hurt. Even though he knew that he should do something, he just couldn't bring himself to make the gesture. The game caught his attention and he let himself get lost in it. That was easier than dealing with the issue.
After wandering about the kitchen for a few minutes, Bridget went into the bedroom to do a little cleaning up. By the time that got done, she needed to start getting dinner ready. Coming out, Bridget looked over at Don. He seemed engrossed in the game. She considered asking him to help but she didn't want his attitude ruining what had been a wonderful 24 hours. If he wanted to help, she thought, he would come without asking. Bridget continued on into the kitchen and went to work.
For a little while Don didn't hear Bridget in the kitchen. The combination of his irritation and watching the game made him oblivious to what was going on behind him. But gradually his touchiness started to fade away and he became aware of what Bridget was doing. He knew he should get up and help. He also began to try and figure out why he got mad at Bridget. "She was trying to be nice and make me feel like I wasn't left out," he thought. He realized he had behaved like a jerk, though he hated to admit it. Finally he sighed and heaved himself off the couch.
Coming up behind Bridget, Don put his arms around her and gave her a hug. For a moment she resisted but then she relaxed and pressed back against Don. Her arms came up to drape over his. "I'm sorry," Don said as he put his head against Bridget's.
Bridget turned her head and kissed him. "It is okay, Sweetie. I know it is all new and we are still working our way through things." Her hand cupped his cheek as she rested against him. "I am trying to make sure that you don't feel overlooked."
"I know you are and I appreciate it," Don told her. He was glad that she didn't bring up directly his failure to get an erection. To himself he thought, "Next time, I need to just have a little self-control so Bridget and I can have our own fun." He tried not to even think about his deepest wish which was that Bridget would convince Sian to let him participate with them. He gave Bridget another squeeze.
They stayed that way for a few minutes more and then disengaged so that they could work on dinner together. For a few minutes there was still a little stiffness between them but before long, it went away and they felt mostly normal. There were still moments when each of them recalled something about the last night and drifted off but it didn't last long. Neither one of them really noticed it when the other did it. Overall it was an enjoyable time that reconnected the two of them. They both took time to give each other kisses and hugs.
It was so nice that Don actually wished that they hadn't invited Sian to come back for dinner. Even though they weren't planning on Sian staying the night, he wished that he and Bridget could have the evening to themselves. Especially since he wasn't really horny, he was less interested in seeing the two of them together again, at least not today.
While Bridget enjoyed the time with Don, she was still looking forward to Sian's return. She loved being with Don but she loved being with Sian too. Especially during the week before Christmas, she often felt torn between them. The last 24 hours had been one of the few times when she could have both and she didn't have to make any choices between them. She appreciated it all the more knowing that after today it would get complicated again.
Bridget tried to put thoughts of the future out of her mind and just focus on today. Today she was happy.

I bet this happens a lot
I think, and I have thought about this in the past. A relationship like this only works if the man involved is 1 or 2 types. The first you I think would be so secure in his relationship with wife that he would enjoy her being happy and learn how to enjoy the whole thing. The second would be the type of guy who already lets his wife walk all over him, he may not enjoy it but he is not going to do anything about it. Anyone in the middle like Don is just not going to be able to handle it.more...
I agree with tygz's commentary and analysis of the storyline to this point. I admire how well Ripley has described the character of Don. With compassion and forbearance to not just turn him into farcical caricature. Aside for this obsession with sharing his wife, I would have no problem with him as a friend.
During the early years of our marriage, my wife and I had the usual ups and downs. I committed adultery and was caught. Fortunately for me, my wife was willing to repair the damage I caused with professional counseling for couples. I had to face up to my adolescent horndog attitude that all busty blondes were fair game for my taking.
Afterwards, we explored different varieties of sexual play and discovered that neither of us was willing to share or particularly got off on events such as orgies or BDSM. From that recognition of our mutual limits, we led a rather vanilla love life until my wife's death.
My problem is now, I find myself repelled by submissive women. I know too well what was done to them by the males in their lives to turn them into 'Smooth Subjects". My preference has always been for strong women who will stand up to my bloated egotism. When I push and shove at'em, they are strong enough to push and shove right back at me.more...
