Lauren loved her dad. Her parents divorced when she was 7. She got along with her mom, too, but cared for her dad because they were so very alike and they just had a stronger connection. She'd skip out on her friends to hang out and eat pizza and watch movies with him. He was married again, but it was not really a happy marriage. He had been seeing this woman for years, and they decided to marry after his diagnosis of stomach cancer. It was a welcomed solution, since her health insurance took care of his chemotherapy needs. His wife resented him some, though, that he couldn't dote on her every waking moment, try as he might. It made him unhappy and frustrated that his attempts went unappreciated.

It started in the few weeks while her father, Paul, was in hospice care at home. She, of course, was with him throughout the whole ordeal. Friends and acquaintances came and went to give her father their farewell blessings. His diagnosis took a turn for the worse and he was given two weeks to live. One true friend of his came every day. David and Paul had been friends for years, always sharing news articles and movie recommendations and stories. It was hard for David to say goodbye, too. His kids were out of the house, and his wife was a good woman, but busy with her own business and friends. David just had Lauren's dad to talk to. And now Paul was leaving him, too.

One Friday, David came over just after Lauren's dad had fallen asleep for a nap. She invited David into the kitchen and offered him a cup of coffee, which he gladly took. They sat at the table in the breakfast nook in silence and sipped their hot, black coffee. Neither spoke, both deep in thought. Finally, Lauren's mind circled back to the current situation and the man sitting before her. She reached out her hand and took his from across the table. It was warm from holding the mug of hot liquid. He was startled by the contact and looked up at Lauren. She noticed the moisture welling up in his eyes, and her own tears began to fall.

"Thank you for coming here every day." She paused. "I know it means a lot to him, and it even is so nice for me to have the company. You know you are welcome anytime."

Then a smile crossed his face. It only reached his eye on one side; a partial smile. He let his eyes fall again and realized that she was still loosely holding his hand. He slowly swept his thumb over the back of her hand. It was a soft and welcomed motion.

She relaxed and gave his hand a brief squeeze of comfort. She then looked directly into his eyes and smiled. He couldn't help but fully smile back. Suddenly warmth that he hadn't felt in weeks, maybe more, filled his stomach and radiated throughout his body. He exhaled, hard, as if to release some of the sudden internal steam putting pressure on his body.

She retreated her hand in order to bring her coffee to her lips once again. David took the opportunity while she was absorbed in her beverage to look over the beautiful woman in front of him. He had known her since she was two years old and only now realized that Lauren was one of the most beautiful goddesses he'd ever seen. Why hadn't he noticed before? Again, David felt the need to cry. Perhaps it was the vulnerability they were both feeling, considering the dying man in the bedroom next door. But it felt more like a yearning, it was an anxious feeling, one he couldn't thoroughly explain. It was a monster he didn't know existed.

Lauren locked eyes with him again. The monster cooed. She gulped down the coffee already in her mouth and smirked, "What?" and chuckled a little. He realized he'd been staring for more than a few seconds.

"Nothing," he smiled back, blushing a little and looking into his own coffee as though it would give him the right cues for words to use.

"What!?" she called again, "what's so funny?"

He was really thinking how beautiful she was in that moment, but thought on it a second and instead said, "Your dad is very lucky to have you." This ruined the happiness in the room, but it was the right thing to say.

She mouthed a "thank you," her voice suddenly lost. No sound would come out, but she gasped in air, beginning to sob but trying to keep from outright crying. David and Lauren were in the same mind again, because they both were compelled to leap from their chairs on either side of the table to embrace in a tight hug. It began as a mere hug between a girl and her dad's best friend. David was only 5 or so inches taller than the girl, but as he stood over her she felt so much smaller. He let a tear fall into her hair, as her face was buried in his neck. She sobbed into his chest, and so he just held her. He cried, too. He could feel the pain riddled in the girl with her arms wrapped around him. One of his own arms was holding her tightly around her back and the other held her head to his chest. His fingers twisted into her hair for a better hold.

After what felt like hours of embracing like that, the next few seconds were maddeningly fleeting, although he would relive them for years to come.

As the sobs slowly subsided, Lauren lifted her head and faced her comforter. Suddenly their noses were only centimeters apart. Her eyes were both clouded with tears and the clearest pools he had ever seen. Her face was damp and hot. Her lips were puffy and glistening in the low-light of the kitchen. David took a sharp breath in and held it, afraid to exhale, that it might ruin this moment.

The monster inside him purred loudly. He felt like his entire body was vibrating. He didn't remember moving his hands, but suddenly his right thumb was wiping away her fallen tears. He was touching her lips. She was getting closer. Her lips were on his. His heart was pounding. Everything was dark. He still hadn't exhaled. Her lips were feeding him all the oxygen he needed. The kiss was energizing him. She pressed on harder and his lips parted. Her bottom lip slid between his and he locked onto it. His left hand, previously around her back, rose to hold her heaving body against his chest. He didn't want it to end. This was exactly what he needed and he didn't want to think about the consequences. His hand rose further still until both held her face to his, firmly, yet apprehensive. He could have held that breath forever if it meant freezing that perfect moment. Lauren broke free first. She gasped for air, and David let go of his breath.

Both of her hands were on his chest. David finally opened his eyes and witnessed her eyes flicker up at him. She bit her bottom lip so slightly. He couldn't tell what emotions she was feeling, so he held completely still, hoping not to aggravate the situation one way or another. He thought perhaps she felt guilt, maybe embarrassment, but when she finally spoke, she looked at him and whispered, "thank you."

She turned to leave. David let her go, unable to do anything else with any conviction. Only after she had left the room completely did he realize his penis had swelled to its full size within his jeans. He stood there for who knows how long, mind racing over what had happened.

He moseyed over to the kitchen island and braced himself against it, trying to relax and let his unwelcome erection subside. When his heart rate slowed to only slightly above average, he realized he couldn't stay in his friend's house forever. He tried to walk like he normally would into the living room, but it was more like an accidental tiptoe, nervous to see how his presence would be received. Lauren was curled up in the chair on the far side of her father's hospital bed. She was holding his hand and watching him as he slept peacefully. David continued to walk over until he was also bedside, and he looked down upon his friend.

"I miss him already," she said, still looking at her father.

"So do I." David touched his friend on the shoulder. "I'm going to take off, and I'll come back after a couple hours, when he's awake."

"You don't have to go. You can sit with me," Lauren offered.

"Thanks, but I'm going to get some lunch and I'll come back when your step mom is home from work to say hi."

Lauren tried to smile, and she nodded, but David couldn't help but notice her disappointment, which made him feel a little let down, himself. David bent down to kiss his friend on the forehead, and he turned and left without looking at the girl again.

When he came back around dinnertime, Paul was awake, his wife was home, and Lauren was back to normal. David knew he did the right thing by leaving - taking advantage of a girl in such a vulnerable state was always wrong - but forever wondered what would have become of their relationship had he stayed with her. He would always have that kiss.

I loved how the emotion and physical connection was tense, erotic and connected. The hunger was lovely.
