Humming merrily to herself, Katie stepped out the door and started walking down to her car. For once she was in a good mood when she'd woken up and now she was in a good mood as she headed off to work. She wasn't sure why, it just seemed like a good day; that and she'd gone to bed a little earlier than usual so for once it felt as though she'd gotten enough sleep. When she got close to her car she made a face; her boyfriend Jose had left the window on the passenger side halfway down. Although it hadn't rained last night, it WAS the beginning of summer which meant that there was always the chance that a bug had gotten in.
The thought made her shudder. She HATED bugs, hated them with a passion. And she was afraid of them... and couldn't kill them either. That crunching noise that they made... ugh, it made her spine tingle and she shuddered again. Giving a glance around the outside of the car, she went around to the driver's side and got in.
As soon as she closed the door she saw it... it was on the door, right next to the window in fact. One of the bugs that she hated the most; big, leggy mosquito eater... they were much worse than actual mosquitoes to her. Mostly because the bug that she was most afraid of were spiders, and these things looked like spiders with their man long spindly legs, but they could also FLY.
Shrieking she slammed the door back open and jumped out of the car. The bug hadn't moved. They stared at each other - or well, she stared at it, she didn't know if it was looking at her because she was standing MUCH to far away from it to even guess where it's eyes were. She'd already been much closer to it than she'd ever wanted to be to any of those bugs.
Oh God... what was she going to do? She had to get to work and the thing was just SITTING there! The decent thing to do would have been to fly away now that the door was just sitting there open, but it wasn't moving! There was no way she was going to use her hand to try and get it out of there... and if she got close enough to roll down the window then the bug was going to take off because it was touching the window... and if it took off and she was rolling down the window then it's most obvious flight path would take it straight into her face. That was DEFINITELY unacceptable.
Stepping away from the car, never taking her eyes off the evil thing, she slowly moved towards the lawn. Once she was satisfied that it wasn't going to fly at her she looked away from the car and scanned the yard...there had to be something here that she could use. Then she saw it, a very long stick - at least three feet - and it still had twigs and leaves attached.
Moving back to the open door of the car she looked at the big bug. It hadn't even budged. Standing as far away from the car door as possible, she reached out with the stick and tried to tap it... and missed. Gritting her teeth she reached out again, bending forward just a little more... and connected. The bug flew upwards... and straight towards her.
Shrieking wildly she swing the stick up and down, trying to hit it and keep it from coming anywhere near her. She must have because it was there one moment and gone the next... curiously she looked on the ground for the big leggy thing but didn't see it. Breathing a sigh of relief she tossed the stick to the side. Glancing to the right, into the back windshield of the car she froze.
There was another one of the damned things! This one was already in flight, but it was flying up and down in the same place, trying to figure out how to get out of the windshield. She groaned, the back windshield was the worst place because there was a part of the car that curved inwards, so the bug was flying against the windshield and every time it actually moved towards the back windshield it was stopped by the car part. Of course, if it just flew a way from the windshield about an inch it would have no problem, but bugs are stupid and don't do that.
Picking her trusty weapon back up, she opened the backdoor AND rolled down the window... and then went to the front door and stood there to reach back into the car. After all, if the bug was going to have to fly out the the back window then she wasn't going to be standing there when it did! Stretching her arm out, sending the stick through her entire car, she tried to sweep the bug out of its little area in the back... it didn't work the first couple times because bugs are too stupid to go along with what's best for them. Gritting her teeth she swept the branch a few more times, finally getting the stupid bug out the back door.
This time, with stick in hand, she prowled around the car, looking carefully for anymore invaders and cursing Jose for leaving the window down. She was sure that she looked like a complete idiot to the neighbors driving by, stalking around her car with a three foot long branch in hand. But she found nothing, although she went over the car twice... with a sigh of relief she tossed the branch back into the yard and got into the car.
Still, she couldn't help looking it over once again now that she was in it and sitting down... much better to find any bugs BEFORE she got on the road. It was much harder to jump out the door in bug-induced terror when the car was in motion.
