Longwood Sixth Hunt Day 01-03

This one may end up being a little bit epic, perhaps not as well. Just warning ya, or perhaps making ya worry for no reason. :p

Balik wakes early on this day, bad dream would think. Luckily Dan gets up to go see him, tried once and Balik was not that happy with it. So Dan goes, while he goes to get Balik calmed down check out the window. Close enough to the sky lighting so hop out of bed and get dressed then collect my belt and Winchester.

Course belt sits lower than like now but Dan makes wear my belt still. Especially when hunting, think he is scared the lynx will attack. Like to say he is wrong but actually am not sure on that, fairly sure the one in the area hunt eats what leave of the coney or pig. This is not the best of things because it may decide that provide food.

This is how dogs joined tribes, just dogs are not prone to attack anything smaller like a child. Get out in the hunt area and shiver, is getting cool. Seem that pregnant mean notice more as well so reckon on shall get out coat early. Sky is lighting and have sound from bush so hunker down and brush at grass.

After moment get pig head so bring up rifle, whistle then shoot. Pig fall over but still life so hop up and work on closer as aim better. Shoot again then realize bush still move, this no so good. If second pig mean either shot large babe or perhaps mated pair. Hard tell on account all pig look same at head then second pig come out of bush with squeal.

Pig charge right at so aim in and shoot pig. Pig lean but no fall and still life so drop rifle and pull Colt to shoot up. Take four shot but pig fall over, also had roll out of way, this pig is large. Must say twice as big as first so have mated pair, just no swell of child. Is confuse on but still move to and check about for other pig.

Finding no other pig taking interest in the no life pig or hunter, drop down and hunter cut. Takes a spell then have problem, two pig, both good sized and one gal. Look back at house to find have mile go, this no good. Still have take both at same or no have second pig. Small pig go over shoulder then grab leg of big pig and drag toward house.

During drag find that no longer cold so is good then see Bonita out of house. She head for outhouse so whistle and wave Winchester. Take moment then Bonita is dash out to help and make return quick like. Course also hard, we share big pig carry and only get one hand. Pig is also heavy so we no hold long enough.

End up pick up pig again four time afore reaching house then get inside. Take bit of try then get both pig on counter to take over to Bartholomew later. While Bonita go and make use of outhouse look over what have for vittles. When she get back suggest pancake with egg and Bonita like so we do pancake with scramble egg, Balik no eat fried egg well.

Vittles all done up we take stack of pancake out with big bowl of egg. Dan and Chad are smiling over the vittles. Balik is clap hands and call pa. Much laugh at this, honest reckon Balik know wrong just do for funny. Get to put pancake on plate for Balik, with egg while Dan does morning prayer then he cut up and add syrup.

No like Dan syrup for Balik though Balik like so is proper. Still think no proper but am mostly only injun think so. Still go and have ice cream plenty, is good flavor.

"Janet why did you shoot so much?" Look over at Dan and sigh.

"Found pig in bush, is big bush. When get pig stick head out shoot and head for to make sure on no life. Second pig in bush, big pig charge so need shoot with Winchester and Colt." Chad wave hand.

"You did not know there was a second pig?" Look down and shake head.

"Big bush and big pig stop move so no see bush move until am head for shot pig. Shoot shot pig then big pig come out of bush in charge."

Chad is chuckle now so kick and we all resume vittles. Is embarrass that miss second pig, then also got third child in danger. Mean is bad hunter and no wish be bad hunter, perhaps mean am old now. After vittles Dan go check on Bartholomew in butcher then get Chad to help take pig. Bonita and me take care of plate, and babes.

Sashi is work on stand now and Balik is plenty of run about. Least no big enough open door so we put in kitchen with and let be. Mind on little since Balik like open cabinet, Sashi crawl in open cabinet. This fine just Balik also close cabinet so Sashi get stuck and wail. Bonita is wipe so can go let out Sashi, who seem like get stuck on account keep do.

Hear train so we look at what have left clean then do quick like and leave sit on towel to dry. Dan no let go for train, he take in to office and have put on silver Colt belt. The inlaid done is beautiful, curlicue all up and down revolver, pearl grip. Even has gold plaque on both grip, both say 'Cherokee Janet'.

Both beautiful pistol and no wear. Do on this day on account no clean other Colt yet and may need. So check on load to find both are then follow Dan for train. Bonita follow to go in sheriff office, Balik and Sashi are sit in there now on account Balik hard for Isaac mind in kitchen. Bonita is try to teach Balik chess, no easy on account Balik like run.

"Heaven's Janet, I didn't get to see those when they arrived." Look over at Andrew and smile.

"Colt went all out. Reckon on Dan wrote good letter." Andrew snorts and shakes his head.

"They took longer to make those than they advertise. Also a bit nicer than the example drawing they sent out, reckon on they asked about you."

Just shrug on account no tell on if they did or not. Then folk are coming toward us so get to do little speech on no gun in town. Then get surprise, have family is move here. All fine and good, just is one difficulty.

"Happy wish move here, reckon on hard find work." Fella shake head and smile.

"Already have work lined up. I'm going to cook in the eatery." Smile on account is good, though no sure which eatery.

"All good then, shall walk with to hotel or house if have built."

"The house isn't built yet, have ordered the wood for it. Also have some crates to collect." Look at man then look up at Andrew to get snort.

"Go on Janet, walk them to the hotel, we will collect the crates and bring them over to the hotel." Nod and smile at the family, have man, wife, and small boy who is stare at belt.

Lead them along street to turn then follow along on new street. Point out laundry along with store, share on ice cream other direction. Constance is little rude to new town family, look right at to ask question.

"Janet where is your sword?" Look down and remember no transfer knife.

"New belt and no transfer, shall get to. Crate or two come for them as well." Constance nod and smile then turn to new town family.

No need to stay so head for house to get knife off other belt. Wave at Dan lug crate with Andrew, Chad behind with Benjamin lug second. Both are proper travel chest so no crate but still can be called since so big. Remember see travel chest like on third cow drive, had two, one for the daughter and one for the husband and wife.

Daughter chest was half empty on account she no have husband. Talked with her some, she was hopeful of get husband soon, been sending out letters to fellas relatives knew. Knife on belt step out of house to get pushed back in by Dan. We sit on the sofa in the sitting room and Dan pull out letter, addressed to both so little surprise.

"We got letter?" Dan nods and pulls me over in to him as he opens it up.

"Don't rightly know what for, this came all the way from Washington D.C. though."

Nod and lean against Dan, he no make read that much, honest is nice. He read then explain what in letter so can understand better. Need to with Ma and Pa letter, they talk funny in the letter. No help Pa has odd way of write, Dan say is cursive and how a fella is supposed to. Dan just read a spell then snort afore twisting to look at.

"Well if that don't just beat all. Washington is reworking the marshal system, don't mean a thing for us but the marshals are going to start touring the country. Not all marshal mind and mostly it will be federal marshal tour in regions but it is a new part of the system and they want us to do a little touring." Ponder on for moment then well there is a question boiling up in my noggin.

"Tour where?"

"Well they are asking us to head into the south. Reckon on account both of us are from southern or border states."

"Dan am injun, they no recognize as in laws." Get squeeze from Dan.

"You are married to me and a deputy as recognized by the state, and government. You are in the laws, also able to enforce the laws. Toss in known across the country." Well alright still there is one thing.

"Am with child Dan." Get kiss now.

"I know and I am worried about you going there with me like that. Course you are also Cherokee Janet, honest I don't think the entirety of the military can win against you with Gatling guns blazing." Snort and giggle, is silly notion.

"Gatling gun is like thousand fella shoot, all aim at same spot, there no life unless no there to start."

"I know that, I also know you wouldn't be where they thought to start. Anyway, go talk to Bartholomew and get a hunk of bacon. I'll go over to the store to get chocolate, licorice, and jerky." Nod then well there is another question boiling.

"Why bacon?"

"Because we are visiting a number of towns and not all are found on train lines. They gave us a list, reckon on these are the towns most in need of a slaughter." Make sense so hop up to go get bacon, then Dan stop with whistle. "Drop the bacon in the pantry and then go on in the saloon and tell Sally. No whoring we are leaving today." Nod then well there is one thing.

"Dan, want get Apache?"

"No, they want us to go, this isn't a bounty so no posse needed."

"Will make hard if need slaughter." Dan sigh and nod.

"I know, but we are not to come prepared for a slaughter, makes folk nervous." Am nervous now.

"Dan, fetch bullet. Four of both." Dan nods and ushers so head across street to Bartholomew.

Going in am met by Mark, the assistant Bartholomew hired. For some reason he try and open door for, though never does and always darts out of way. Is odd behavior but also funny, and he has explain, grew up in city where a gal no open door. Fella always open door for a gal, which is nice though am able get door so no see why need fella open.

Bartholomew is watch as head for him with smile. He is also cut up pig so know be pig night today and then no stay for pig.

"Need get big hunk of bacon." Bartholomew stop cut to look at.

"You are off on a hunt now?" Nod and sigh.

"Washington send letter, new thing for marshal do visit and want us do first." Door open and Grace step in with Mark hold for her.

"Isaac wanted me to come ask how many ribs you got." Bartholomew snort.

"Tell him he is getting four rows of six inch ribs in two hours." Grace nod then curtsy and scoot on out. "Mark take this pork roast over to Fen and tell him the rump will be a bit longer." Mark come and get roast wrapped in paper and exits.

"Hunk of bacon." Bartholomew point finger at for moment then go in his icebox.

"Normally I give these to Isaac and Saul but I got at least two more big ones out of your pigs so you get a full hunk." Jaw drop at size of hunk he bring out, quite large, no sure can fit in saddle bag.

"Cut small?" Get look at for moment then Bartholomew snort.

"I am not cutting it small, tell me how big and use a full sentence." Sigh and roll eye.

"We are packing in saddle bags so I would think no more than eight inches."

"Huh I guess Dan was right."

Bartholomew go and cut hunk of bacon up then wrap the three piece in separate paper. Course two are eight inch and the third is no more than four inch. Still will need add bacon to most everything while am cook. Also long enough will make pack difficult on account need bring other thing like flour and oil.

Exit butcher and cross street to drop bacon in pantry. Look about in pantry for moment and reckon on need purchase all supplies then go get in tracking leather. Dan say we no use train all time so ride and dress no good for ride. Exit house and see Dan so head for on account want ask if can eat at Fen first.

"Janet why are you wearing that?" Roll eye again, fellas in this town.

"Not rushing for a train, part of the letter is a listing of towns and the path they would like us to take. Oddly the towns on the transcontinental line are not having a big problem, the towns on the old settler trail neither, we are riding between excepting to cross the Mississippi."

"There is bridge?" Dan nods and smiles.

"No boat ride."

"Dan you get sick." Dan sigh and swat on head.

"Go tell Sally then yes we will go eat at Fen's so we can at least enjoy some of the pig." Giggle a bit as head for saloon.

Go in and see Bipin sit right there, his jaw drop when notice then argument of some sort. Wave at Bipin then head for argument, as go get notice by rest of poker table and they drop to floor. Craps players drop to floor or hide behind table. Two arguing no notice until am there, notice then on account pull Colt and cock both.

"No argue or get cross."

Both fella turn white, nod, then sit back down at poker so turn round and go for Sally. Sally is giggle as get to stair. Is laugh in hand when reach her so stop there and kick, get her to stop the laugh.

"Sorry Janet that was the fastest end of an argument I've ever seen. Reckon on got a hunt as well."

"No hunt, Washington ask to be first to travel in region. Seem marshal do that now, we get ask to do for some reason. Dan say on account of known across country and from south state." Sally just stare at a spell then sigh.

"You know that is the most words I've heard you say since a little after you two moved here."

"Seem fellas forget know round eye so question on, no like so use more words." Sally is giggle again then notice new belt.

"Heavens, those are the new pistols Dan ordered?" Nod and pull one out to hand over.

"Quite lovely, Andrew reckon on Colt asked about me. Seems they took longer to make than advertise and seem nicer to boot." Sally is nod and look over Colt.

"I can see why you demanded these."

"No demand, just plead. Dan get final say on and reckon he thinks they are nicer looking."

"Did Dan order a silver pistol?" Have to shrug.

"No ask and he no say." Sally snort and shake head.

"Yes well we are doing pig tonight, are you leaving after?" Sigh and shake head.

"Leave soon, eat at Fen eatery first so get to enjoy pig that I shot." Atmaja is come down stair now, fella she with go right on by while she stop for coin and can speak on worry.

"Atmaja can you see if your husband will stay in the sheriff house, have hunt and Balik is handful." Atmaja snort and nod.

"Shall need ask."

"Better ask Bonita, it's her house too." We look at Sally then Atmaja nods.

"Yes shall, husband is past office."

"Whittling?" Atmaja nods and smiles.

"He is getting better, reckon on can start sell what he carve." Nod and smile.

"Ask Claire, she is mind of store not Andrew." We all giggle a bit afore head for store, need pick up what Dan no order.

Luck find Dan fall in step with on way toward store. He no say any then we go in store and Elan give smile. Course then Dan decide to speak and Elan is drop below counter.

"Janet I already got plenty."

"Dan did you get flour, oil, salt, and vegetables?"

"Well no but we will stop at the next town south." Sigh and shake head.

"If no get supply now then no time hunt when stop. Next town we will reach an hour afore it start get dark and no hunt then. Aside no see how much chocolate and licorice you order." Elan pop head over counter at that.

"Dan got five penny of both."

"Did he get black or red?" Red licorice is new and sweeter, seem new recipe on and company is make plenty on account is popular.

"I got a penny of the red, I like it and it should be found in most towns." Look at Dan and have to account on that being true.

"Elan, afore anything else another six penny of black licorice and four penny of red. Reckon on Dan eat plenty since only do morning and night vittles when ride."

Elan hop up and go do, so get other fella to run and get a mess of salt, oil, flour, and eggs. Dan recall need sugar, so then add in a good size jar of syrup so can make pancake. Poke funny at Dan with comment of enough to make pancake once. Reckon on make at least three with what in jar so long as just Dan and me.

Ponder moment then get a couple pound of tater, ten cans of pea, and one can of carrot. No try afore though do like pea so reckon on be nice enough. Get all in box so make Dan lug for house and check hat to make sure on have plenty herb. Seem could use a few more bits so go around house to snip out what am low on along with make sure on have enough left.

This from Dan, he say no take more than half plant so can recover in week or two. Giggle a bit on no take more than half with Bonita for a spell. Most recipe only call for a leaf or two broken up. Then head over to Fen eatery to get ushered to law table. Fen have plenty laugh at law table then say this law table.

Law table is table that have roll with Dan at after first hunt. Seem most town no want sit there, even though do have roll in eatery. Fen brought out more little wall to put around and honest is nice, hard see anyone else. Course still have folk talk to other table, is town so no many folk here.

"Dan is Washington pay to do not hunt?" Dan snort and nod.

"Yes, in a way we have a bounty. Afore you get excited and prepare to shoot everyone, we are getting twenty dollars to stop in a town. If there are arrests made, shooting dead counts for this, we get another ten dollars a head. The path they want us to take means we get all the way in to Georgia. Honestly I think they hope we run into James and Younger. Rumor has it they are in Mississippi right now though they tend to move fast."

"Do marshal get paid do same?"

"No, they are on a salary, means they get paid so much a month. Also wish you would keep using proper English." Sigh and kick Dan.

"So why are we getting paid to visit each town and for arrests?"

"Because we are not marshals. They are trying to get the southerners to like the law better than they do. Honestly I'm fairly sure the southerners like the law fine, so long as it is a southerner enforcing it. Carpetbaggers are all over the place there, some actually do what they are supposed to be doing, the rest are likely who you will shoot."

Fen come over with couple plate with big portion of sweet and sour pork. We both fall to on vittles since they are good and reckon will eat late today. Brings to mind one thing so smile at Dan.

"Before you go and do something tell me what it is." Snort and giggle.

"Just going to go and get a couple chops from Bartholomew, so no need to hunt tonight." Dan ponder a bit then smile.

"Good plan, what about in the morning?" Sigh and roll eye.

"Shall hunt then do vittles. Reckon will be coney and bacon tortilla wrap." Dan is quiet for short spell then nod.

"Shall go and get onions, can buy more but you said no stopping in the next town."

"Unless is town supposed to stop at." Dan snort and shake his head.

"No the first town we are supposed to stop at is a ways. There is one good thing, we are not going to New Orleans." Just look at Dan a short spell.

"What is New Orleans?"

"It is a town, no it is a city for all intents, right on the mouth to the Mississippi, it is also marsh land. They talk funny there, also not having law problems aside the basic ones that come from having a big town."
